30 min Contemporary Art Explainer

Contemporary art is painting, sculpture, photography, installation, performance and video art. But the practice of art has expanded to include social practice, street art and digital art as well.

Many art historians consider the late 1960s or early 1970s (the end of modern art, or modernism) to be the approximate beginning of 'contemporary art'.

I will briefly cover influential art movements, including Pop Art, Performance Art and Installation and Earth Art, and how these movements were influenced by political and social contexts.
We can then talk about emerging trends in art, either:
1. Emerging digital artforms such as NFTs, AI and blockchain. This will include a look at some of the issues around attribution and artistic production, and new economic models supported by digital platforms.
2. Socially-engaged practices and collaborative approaches, including non-human collaborations. Choosing this option will include a discussion of specific artworks, mainly works by Australian contemporary artists, such as Fiona Hall, Lucas Ihlean, Janet Laurence and influences, such as Josef Beuys.

Training & Qualifications

I am a qualified painter, photographer and sculptor, with a Bachelor of Fine Art (Sculpture) and a Bachelor of Applied Science (Photography) as well as a Diploma in Painting.

I have worked in the Galleries, Libraries, Archives and Museum sector for many years, including at the Museum of Old and New Art (MONA) in tasmania/lutruwita.
